Nestled in Nature
The Background
This contemporary-style home was initially designed and built around 1968 by its first occupant, renowned architect Peter Chermayeff, and it remains a beautiful example of how thoughtfully designed architecture can transcend an era. 50+ years later, its design still feels current. The home is perfectly sited amidst protected wetlands, and every room maintains an intimate connection with nature through abundant oversized windows, clearly an influence from Chermayeff’s extensive background in designing some of the world’s most iconic Public Aquariums.
The Renovation
Some years later, the home was later turned into a private art gallery. Then North River Builders, Inc. was hired to renovate the interior spaces and convert it back to a full-time home for the new owners. We renovated the floor plan to accommodate a new Primary Suite, adding Bedrooms and a Bathroom, a new Kitchen, and other modifications in harmony with the original architectural style and conservation land surrounding it all. The dining room still leads out to the deck, which is perched 12 feet above the pond below – a serene setting any day of the year.
Since this home is entirely within protected wetlands and conservation areas, the permitting process was extensive, ensuring compliance with protected species regulations. The result is a one-of-a-kind property, a true sanctuary.
Our clients recently shared a 1974 magazine article featuring the home & we recreated some of the photos. Click here for our blog post about it!
